Photo Tech:
It’s about time!
The Epson’s P-7000 was a traveling photographer’s best friend. In one device, you had multi-format card readers, a portable hard drive and a viewer. It was capable to storing and previewing RAW and JPEG files with 94% of Adobe RGB color.
For years, our photography students have asked what solutions were available when traveling. For many, the risk of traveling with a laptop was too high. Some managed the risk by toting many extra memory cards, while others would transfer image files with a netbook to a backup drive.
Western Digital has announced a new product to their My Passport line, a wireless version of their popular hard drives. It’s going to be good.
The new My Passport Wireless boasts lots of wireless capability including:
- wireless hotspot
- wirelessly connect to mobile devices
- streaming media and
- Internet sharing
All this wireless functionality is wrapped around a 2TB hard drive (smaller options available) with a SD card reader, USB 3.0 and a rechargeable battery which promises up to 6-hrs of streaming video.
My Passport Wireless may not have a 4″ screen like the Epson P-7000, but it will allow you to setup the device and preview your images through an app which installs on your tablet or mobile phone. This will be a valued asset at our coming Crested Butte, Moab or Yellowstone Workshops.
Travel photographers now have a solution when seeking storage and backup while on-the-go.
